Tired of Visiting Your Safe Deposit Box – How About a Diversion Safe at Home?

April 23rd, 2010 by Staff

Do you keep valuables and keepsakes in a safe deposit box? Although, your property is safe, how many times do you wish you had a special item at home so you could enjoy it, but it was just too much trouble to go to the bank to get it. After all aren’t “things” supposed to be enjoyed. You can’t enjoy them if they are not within easy reach. So consequently, they are just stored somewhere and it may be years before you ever see or touch them. What fun is that? A favorite ring, bracelet or necklace should be worn whenever the occasion arises and a special keepsake should be admired and held from time to time. Keepsakes can rekindle joyful and fond memories and can just plain make your smile. So, don’t deprive yourself of joy.

With the price of gas and the value of your time, it just makes sense to use a diversion safe to stash valuables in your home in plain sight, where you can easily access them.

Burglars like to get in and get out and usually check out the bedroom first as it is a common area for hiding valuables.

These safes come in so many common containers that look and feel just like the real thing that a burglar won’t have a clue as to which is which. And, he won’t want to spend the time to check them all out to see which is real and which is fake. There are books, electrical outlets, salt containers, peanut butter jars, flower pots, stones, all kinds of popular soda cans, cleaner cans and more. They range in price from $9 to $39, a small price to pay for convenience and peace of mind.

How to Learn to Read Green Contours

April 21st, 2010 by Staff

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Reading the green means more than figuring out how the ball will curve. It means figuring out how much it will curve given the speed you want to hit the putt. This practice procedure will educate your eye to see contour and know how much it will affect your putt.

Practice putting for a few minutes to warm up your stroke and your feel for the practice green. Now find a 12-foot breaking putt and take out the two knitting needles you brought with you, the ones that are connected by a 15-foot piece of string. Put one needle in the ground in front of you and the other needle directly behind the hole.

Use the string to guide your stroke so you hit the ball straight toward the hole. Of course, the ball will curve away. Pay careful attention to how hard you hit the ball, and by how much the ball misses the hole as it passes by.

Put another ball on the same spot from where you hit the first one. Take the second needle out of the ground behind the hole and put in the ground so that the string passes the same distance to one side of the hole as the ball missed on the other side.

Step back, and look at the contour, now knowing exactly how the ball will curve at the speed you just hit it. Say the putt passed the hole four inches to the right, you’re now seeing what a contour that breaks four inches right looks like. That’s how you learn what contours do – not by guessing when you look, but by already knowing when you look.

Now hit the putt a second time with the same speed as the first. It should go right in the hole.

This might not be a new idea for you. Have you ever, while playing, pulled back a putt you missed, hit it again, and sank it? It’s because you knew what the break was, where the first time you weren’t sure. Take that idea to the practice range and make it work for you. You’ll build up a great awareness of and sensitivity to the green.

Practice putts that break both ways. Practice short, sloping putts, uphill or downhill, the ones that give us fits. You will surprised at how much you can improve your eye with must a little bit of practice.

Low Cost Video Surveillance Tips

April 19th, 2010 by Staff

What is the most important aspect of video surveillance, and why is it so important? The answer to this commonly asked question is that video surveillance is predicated upon location of the camera, consistency in viewing, and overall awareness of surroundings.

First thing to do with video surveillance is position the camera in a place that will allow for optimal views. This means that each camera should be out of the reach of anyone that might want to take it down, and at the same time, be effectively located in a place to capture the clearest images possible. A lot of this will come into play if you have an incident, or you think you see someone trespassing, and you must try to identify what is going on. If the camera isn’t in the right direction, the entire incident may occur without proper filming of it.

Next one should become a consistent viewer of the video surveillance tapes, and live feeds. This means that it should be a daily activity to watch the videos of your home surveillance to look out for any odd activity. Often thieves will case a house for several weeks before robbing it. This means that it will be, most likely, caught on tape before the incident occurs. Keep an eye out for any stranger, and then make any adjustments to keep them away from your property necessary.

Finally it is imperative to keep an open mind when dealing with video surveillance, and the surroundings of what is being filmed. There are often instances of one performing video surveillance that leads to false accusations, and general misunderstandings. There are many reasons that this scenario occurs, but it usually results in the video surveillance user to make assumptions before doing proper research to back up such assumptions. For example, one may be conducting video surveillance on their property, and see some random people entering the yard next door for nearly a week straight. Without thinking about it the activity is reported, but it is found out after that the house is for rent, and potential tenants have been looking at it for leasing purposes. It is incidents like this that highlight the need for caution when performing video surveillance.

When used properly, video surveillance can be a powerful tool in protecting your home, and others from potential disasters, and burglaries. Without video surveillance one may never see the imminent threats that are out there until it is too late.

A Few Simple Rules When Looking At Purchasing A Combination Lock

April 18th, 2010 by Staff

A combination lock is the type of lock where sequences of numbers or symbols are used to open a lock rather than a key. Often the sequence of number or symbols used is a permutation rather than a real combination and these may be entered either by entering them using a single rotation dial (which interacts with several discs or cams) or by a set of several rotating discs with inscribed numerals or symbols (which directly interact with the locking mechanism itself).

Firstly we will look at multiple dial locks and which is one of the simplest type of combination locks. These are often used for low security situations such as a bicycle lock which has several rotating discs with notches cut into them. The lock is secured by a pin that has several teeth on it which then hook into the discs that rotate around it. Thus when the discs and notches are aligned with the teeth of the pin the lock can open. Unfortunately the disadvantage of this type of lock is that it is considered to be one of the least secure types of combination locks available today.

The opening of such a lock can be done without the combination it all depends on the slight irregularities which will occur during the machining of the locks parts. So unless the lock has been precisely machines (the pin pulled outward) then you are likely to find that one of the teeth will pull more strongly than others on its corresponding disc. Once this disc is rotated and a slight click can be heard this tells the person that the tooth has become placed in its correct notch and thus this procedure can be repeated with the other remaining discs which will result in the lock being opened (a correct combination on such a lock can be found in a very short period of time).

Next we come on to the single-dial locks, these are normally found on padlocks or safes and will often just use a single dial which then interacts with several parallel discs or cams. Such locks are normally opened by the rotation of the dial clockwise to the first numeral and then counter clockwise to the second and so on until in this alternating fashion until the last numeral has been reached. Typically the cams inside the lock have an indentation or notch on them and it is only when the correct combination has been entered and the notches or indentations have become aligned that the latch will be able to fit into them and the lock can be opened.

Certainly these type of combination locks are generally more secure that the multiple dial locks and yet they do have some weaknesses as well. Certainly early combination padlocks which were made by Master Lock could be opened by pulling on the shackle and turning the dial until it stopped and thus each numeral involved in the locks combination could be revealed.

However, the more recent models of the Master padlock now come with 40-position dial and this has a weakness where it gives away the last numeral in the locks combination and the first two numerals of the lock have a mathematical relationship to this one. Because of this weakness it reduces the possible number of combinations a person can try to open it from 64,000 to a mere 100 instead, which results in the lock being opened in a very short time.

Unfortunately an inexpensive padlock is not the solution either as these are often susceptible to them being shimmed, which is often used to release the shackle without the actual combination being entered.

There are many other designs available and many doors lock now use a combination lock system which requires the user to enter a numeric sequence on to a keypad for them to gain entry. However, such locks usually require the use of electronic circuitry to be effective. But the one main advantage of such a system as this is that if it is used for the door of a large office then each member of staff can be provided with the number that they will need to gain access and thus eliminate the use of supplying them with keys which could be either lost or stolen.

The only real disadvantage of this type of lock is that if the code number for entry is discovered by someone who is not employed by the company, or the number is not changed regularly, then access to the property can be gained by an intruder (such as a burglar).

CCTV Security Surveillance – Information to Help You Choose the Right Products For You

April 14th, 2010 by Staff

Buying a CCTV system is by no means easy. The vast array of products available nowadays could confuse anyone so we have tried our best to put together a guide to help you make an informed decision about what system should fulfill your requirements.

Before we go through how to choose a complete CCTV System, some people may only want to connect a camera to a TV/Monitor to view and record via a video recorder.

This is simple to do, when you have selected the camera you want pick the option with the correct length ‘Plug & Play’ cable. Make a note of the ‘connector’ type, this is usually BNC, then check your TV connections. They will probably be phono or scart. Then you will need to buy a BNC to Phono connector, and if necessary a scart connection. And you’re done; you simply plug these connections into the end of your cable, and into your TV. Place the camera where you want and record images on to your video recorder, keeping in mind that it can only record for as long as there is space on the video tape. Of course you will need to “tune” in a channel on your TV to see your camera.

Below we go into more details about the two main parts of a CCTV security system, the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) and the Camera’s.

Digital Video Recorder Basics…

The Digital Video Recorder is the “brain” of a CCTV system; it takes the images from the cameras and stores them on to a hard disk drive. You can then look at the images recorded on the hard drive, and review what the cameras have been viewing by connecting a monitor (or other form of display unit) to the DVR. You can forward and rewind through the images in much the same way you may have done so with a typical Video recorder. On many you can search for specific dates and times to quickly find the footage you want to view.

Once you have your images recorded on the hard drive, from time to time there may be an incident which you will be required to give to the police as evidence, you will then need to back up the Data they require from the hard drive on to another storage device.

Backing Up Data…

All Digital Video Recorders store information on a hard drive, something you should consider when choosing your Digital Video Recorder is how you will back-up this Data if there is ever an incident that you may be required to provide evidence of to the police.

Common forms of back-up include:

o Connecting to Video recorder: This is mainly only for ‘budget’ Digital Video Recorders and involves connecting the Digital Video Recorder to a video recorder and recording the information on to tape.

o USB to PC link: Quite common, and simple to do, simply connect the Digital Video Recorder to a PC via cable and copy information to PC Hard drive, from there you can write on to disk, pen stick etc.

o USB Pen Stick: Quite common and simple to do, amount of storage depends on USB pen stick used.

o CD Rewriter (built in or external): simple to do, some Digital Video Recorders would also require you to load software on to any device that you wanted to then watch the CD on. You should keep this in mind if giving CDs to police as with this software they would not be able to view the CD. Also bare in mind CDs are limited to 750 Megabytes.

o DVD Rewriter (built in or external): simple to do, some Digital Video Recorders would also require you to load software on to any device that you wanted to then watch the DVD on. You should keep this in mind if giving DVDs to police as with this software they would not be able to view the DVD. 4.7Gigabyte of space available.

o Networked: You can copy data from your Digital Video Recorder on to any PC while viewing it over the internet

Digital Video Recorders are available as Standalone units or PC based units. Choosing which one is a personal preference, but I’ll take this opportunity to point out a couple of things. Although many PC based Digital Video Recorders offer lots of added features and familiar use, standalone Digital Video Recorders are purpose built for the job and are considered more reliable and therefore less likely to fail. With PC based units we would strongly recommend the pc is used as a security device only and not used as a standard pc with surveillance, this should reduce the risk of failures.

Also if you are “PC savvy” and decide to buy a Digital Video Recorder PC Card and install it into your PC yourself, please check that you will not void your PC warranty before you do.

Last but not least, and this goes for all Digital Video Recorders, where possible try to use a purpose built hard drive. By this we mean that some people, to save costs, use a normal PC hard drive in a Digital Video Recorder. Unfortunately this usually ends up with the hard drive failing simply because a pc hard drive is not designed to be constantly “working” twenty four hours a day – seven days a week. Also please check the compatibility of the hard drive with your Digital Video Recorder, as some may require IDE drives, others SATA, and some may work better with Seagate, others Maxtor.

Ok, now hopefully you have a better idea about what a Digital Video Recorder is, and its purpose, now let’s consider the Cameras.

CCTV Camera Basics…

For those who know little or nothing about what a CCTV camera is, or what it does.

CCTV Cameras are the “eyes” of a CCTV system, you place them inside and outside buildings to enable you to see and also record (via a Digital Video Recorder) what the camera is looking at.

Unfortunately that’s where it stops being easy, we cant emphasize enough how you need to educate yourself as much as possible about what CCTV cameras are capable of and then look seriously as to what you want to use a camera for and what you need that camera to do. By this we mean there are literally thousands of cameras available nowadays, but this is because there are so many different situations where a camera is required that there isn’t just one camera for all jobs.

So how do you go about choosing a camera, well you have to start with basics….

First where is the camera going? Indoors or outdoors? If outdoors use the weatherproof guide to choose what kind of an IP rating your camera requires.

Weather Proof Rating…

Weather proof is measured using an IP Rating, if a camera doesn’t state an IP rating you can consider it is for internal use only.

IP Ratings Guide

The IP classification system designates the degree of protection provided by an enclosure against solid objects or water ingress.

There are always two digits in an IP rating, the first digit refers to the protection against solid objects (dust) and the second digit refers to the protection against water.

Dust Protection (first digit):

0 = Non-protected

1 = Protected against a solid object greater than 50mm, such as a hand.

2 = Protected against a solid object greater than 12.5mm, such as a finger.

3 = Protected against a solid object greater than 2.5mm, such as wire or a tool.

4 = Protected against a solid object greater than 1.0mm, such as wire or thin strips.

5 = Dust-protected. Prevents ingress of dust sufficient to cause harm.

6 = Dust tight. No ingress of dust.

Water Protection (second digit):

0 = Non-protected

1 = Protected against dripping water.

2 = Protected against dripping water when tilted up to 15º.

3 = Protected against spraying water at an angle of up to 60º.

4 = Protected against splashing water from any direction.

5 = Protected against jets of water from any direction.

6 = Protected against heavy seas or powerful jets of water. Prevents ingress sufficient to cause harm.

7 = Protected against the effects of temporary immersion in water.

8 = Protected against the effects of continuous immersion in water.

So for using CCTV cameras outdoors, I would recommend a very minimum IP rating of 55, but preferably 65 and above.

Once you know this, go to the area where you want to install the camera and look at what you want the camera to see. How far is the scene you want to capture from the camera? How big is it? Think about this and make sure you know what lens size you need to be able to see the scene you want at the distance it is away. There are many CCTV Lens Calculators on the internet to help you.

Consider, will you need to be able to see in dark conditions? Or only during the day time? If its needs to see in low light conditions, how dark does it get? Is there a street lamp near by? Or is there a security light on the premises? Go back at night time and see how dark it actually is, then use the Lux guide to see what kind of “minimum illumination” your camera requires. Keep in mind during the winter it gets dark very early, no good having a camera that’s only useful during the summer.

Lux Guide:

0.00005 lux = Starlight

0.0001 lux = Moonless overcast night sky

0.001 lux = Moonless clear night sky

0.01 lux = Quarter Moon

0.25 lux = Full Moon on a clear night

1 lux = Moonlight at high altitude at tropical latitudes

3 lux = Dark limit of civil twilight under a clear sky

32000 lux = Sunlight on an average day (min.)

100000 lux = Sunlight on an average day (max.)

Is the camera going to be installed in such a place it may be subject to vandalism? If so make sure you use a vandal resistant camera.

Ok, now hopefully you have a better idea about what a CCTV camera is and what kind best suits your situation. With all the above knowledge, I hope it helps you choose a suitable CCTV system for your needs.

And good luck with your security project…

How To Choose A Driveway Alarm

April 12th, 2010 by Staff

Once you decide you have a use for a driveway alarm, the next step is choosing the right one for your application. Fortunately, choosing driveway alarms is a relatively easy as long as you know how you want to use them.

The first choice you have to make in choosing a driveway alert device is to choose between wired and wireless. As the name implies, a wired driveway monitor has a wire that runs from the outside sensing unit, all the way back to the monitor device inside.

If you’re building a new house or business, this wire can often be installed without a lot of expense. But if you’re installing the driveway monitor in an existing building, then the cost of burying the cable (in a conduit if you have a gopher or mole problem), fishing it into the building, and cutting a trench in your driveway can be cost prohibitive.

This is where a wireless driveway alert device is a better choice. Depending on the type of alarm you choose, you may still have a wire running from the sensor to a transmitter unit, but this is a relatively short piece of cable.

If you choose a wireless driveway monitor, you just need to ensure the unit you choose has a long enough range to reach back to your building from the area you want to monitor. You can get units that will reach up to a couple of miles away. When looking at the various wireless driveway alert systems available, keep in mind that the distance quoted by manufacturers is most likely the maximum range you would get if there were no obstructions between the outside sensor and the in-building monitor. Your actual range will likely be less so be sure to factor that in.

Once you decide between wired or wireless, then the type of monitor you need is the next choice. Do you want to be alerted by approaching vehicles, people, or both? If you just want to be notified of vehicles, then a metal-detecting probe buried in your driveway may be the best choice. You can still go wireless between the transmitter and the in-building monitor, but you will still need to bury some wire between the sensor probe and the transmitter.

The benefits of using the metal-detecting probe is that you won’t experience false signals from deer or other large animals that may trip a motion detecting driveway alarm sensor. These probes will detect large metallic object such as cars, but they won’t detect a passing animal or people walking on your driveway.

If you decide you want to detect people too, then the motion-sensing driveway sensors are the only way to go. The good thing is that you can place these units high enough that they won’t be triggered by small animals.

The next thing to consider is the features you want. Most systems have the basics that include a relay you can use to open a gate or activate external lights, sirens, or even video cameras. But here are a few of the more unique features that may interest you:

Intercom Feature: This feature lets you listen in to the motion sensor once it is triggered. You can even talk back to whoever triggered the sensor. This is a great feature if you are using the driveway alert system to hear who is at a gate and then decide if you want to open the gate remotely.

Handheld Monitor: If you are roaming around your property and want to be notified that someone triggered the driveway monitor, you can get handheld radios that will announce this. This could be a great feature for security guards.

Spoken Alert Signal: If you have more than one driveway or coverage area, you can get systems that will give a verbal alert signal when a motion sensor is triggered. You’ll hear, “Alert Zone One” or “Alert Zone Two” for up to four monitored zones.

Birdhouse Camouflage: One particular model even has a birdhouse kit that surrounds the motion sensor so people entering your driveway will be unaware that it is there.

So the driveway alarm you choose depends on whether you want to run wire or not, the distance between the sensor and the monitor, and the features you need. Once you choose a driveway alarm and have it installed, you’ll experience the peace of mind knowing that you have another layer of protection for your home or business.

How to Choose a Locksmith Company

April 10th, 2010 by Staff

Choosing a professional, trustworthy locksmith company is an important decision for any home or business owner who needs security or locksmith work done to the property. Not only will the quality of the lock and the lock’s security depend on the professionalism that is brought to the project, but the owner will know that the lock has come from a secure, trustworthy source if he or she chooses a great quality, professional locksmith company.

A person who wants to hire a locksmith company should begin by referencing local locksmiths in the area, on the Internet or in the phone book. Usually, there will be quite a few listings for companies offering locksmiths services. It would be a much better decision to call a company that claims to have been in business for over twenty years. The longer the locksmith company has been around, the more reliable, trustworthy, and honest they will be.

A company that has been providing locksmith work for more than a decade will have numerous, professional references that can attest to the quality and security of the company’s work. With access to the Internet, many search engines will provide customer ratings and opinions of the listed locksmith companies. It is a great way to chose a locksmith service, because the user will be able to consider all available companies and see what other people have to say about the companies.

People must think twice about which locksmith company they hire, because hiring a poorly managed or dishonest locksmith could jeopardize the security of the structure. A person must be able to trust that the locksmith has not duplicated the keys for the lock, which could provide assisted entry to unscrupulous thieves. Another good way to find a great locksmith services is to ask close friends and relatives. These people will know what you expect, and they should be able to refer you to a suitable locksmith company.

Always locksmith provide 24 emergency locksmith services in the UK. We provide auto locksmith services, residential and commercial.

Install a Home Burglar Alarm – Protect Your Home and Family

April 8th, 2010 by Staff

In these times of high unemployment property crimes are surging upward. Theft from homes and cars, including break and enter crimes, is at an all time high. In these circumstances the best way to protect your possessions and your family from criminals is to install a good home burglar alarm system in your home.

Home alarm systems used to be quite expensive to install since they were hard wired. That is to say that the components of the system were all connected by wires. This usually meant having to tear open walls to install the wiring. The walls then had to be repaired and refinished afterwards. This of course requires a lot of labor and expense. This work can only be done by experienced professional installers who know what they are doing. Installation of a wired intruder alarm system is not a job for the amateur.

Fortunately times have changed and sophisticated wireless home alarm systems are now the norm. A wireless intruder alarm is easily installed since no wires are needed, and walls do not have to be opened up. This cuts the cost greatly and in fact makes it easily possible for the home owner to install this type of alarm himself. It is only necessary to mount the control panel on a suitable wall and to place the individual alarms at the points where they are required. All signals are transmitted by radio to the central processor.

The cost of installation is low even if done by professionals and it is in fact best to get professional advice on where best to install all the components. This may cost a reasonable fee but is well worthwhile in order to have peace of mind in knowing that you have a good installation.

A wireless home alarm system will give security and protection to your valued possessions and even more so to your family members.

Choosing The Best Burglar Alarm For Your Home Or Business

April 7th, 2010 by Staff

Burglar Alarm

A burglar alarm can be the difference between tragedy, and safety. While there are many reasons for getting a burglar alarm installed, there are very few that argue not to get one installed. A burglar alarm twenty years ago was a luxury for the wealthy, and well off home owners that had money to waste. Now, it is an affordable option for anyone looking to protect themselves, and their goods from a robbery, or home invasion.

Burglar alarm’s often catch thieves with strategic placement. Some proud owners actually disguise the fact they own an alarm, just to nab the crooks that loiter their communities streets. The sophisticated nature of catching a thief, combined with new advancements in technology, has led to a growth of prolific new burglar stopping systems that will surely nab any thief trying to get into your home.

One of the most elementary and old school tactics of a burglar alarm is that it makes a noise that scares the daylights out of anyone with ears. This is still as good of a warning as any other one for people to become alert. The noise can not only alert others to call the police, but it creates an instant call for eyewitnesses to take in whatever scene is going on near them at the alarm site. This special noise is instrumented to pierce our ears in hopes that it will awake those that are sleeping, and scare the criminal away from the premises. In fact, some alarms, will simply make this noise, and do nothing else because they aren’t connected to a monthly service provider. This is a good budget option for those considering burglar alarms.

Burglar alarms with a monthly service connection are great because they contacts police and first responders as soon as they are triggered. This allows you to focus on getting to a safe place, and not worry about trying to find the phone.
